IPHONE 13 PRO MAX

iPhone 13 Pro Max Is Officially the Fastest 5G Device in North America

The iPhone 13 Pro Max has just been crowned the fastest 5G smartphone across all U.S. and Canadian carriers, according to research conducted by Ookla, maker of the popular Speedtest app for mobile devices.

In its Q4 2021 Market Report, Ookla ranked the performance of U.S. carriers for speed, consistency, and reliability, however it also rated the speeds of the most popular devices in the U.S. and Canada during that same quarter.

While it shied away from declaring a “statistical winner,” it noted that the iPhone 13 Pro Max came out on top, with a median download speed of 90.58 Mbps.

In second place came the iPhone 13 Pro, which clocked in at 89.61 Mbps, while Google’s Pixel 6 5G came in a very close third at 89.05 Mbps.

The iPhone 13 mini also made the top five, coming in at 84.73 Mbps, just behind the Pixel 6 Pro 5G.

While the discrepancy between the iPhone 13 Pro Max and the iPhone 13 Pro seems odd at first glance, since both devices pack in the same Qualcomm X60 5G chipsets and same A15 CPU, it’s important to consider that Ookla’s results aren’t based on empirical laboratory testing of the devices in question, but rather an averaging of data from users who conduct performance tests with Ookla’s Speedtest app.

Even Faster in Canada

Ookla doesn’t confine its findings to just the U.S. In fact, it publishes reports for over 40 different countries, from Algeria to Vietnam.

In Canada, the iPhone 13 Pro Max fared even better, achieving a median 5G download speed of 144.24 Mbps. The iPhone 13 Pro was still in second place, the standard iPhone 13 followed behind third, while it was Samsung’s Galaxy S21+ 5G that came in fourth, followed by the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G in fifth place.

The differences were more stark here, however, with Apple’s iPhone 13 models beating out Samsung’s phones by a healthy margin; the S21+ 5G only clocked in at 116.73 Mbps

The Carriers

Among the U.S. carriers, T-Mobile once again came out on top, and in fact it actually surged ahead, with median 5G download speeds of 187.12 Mbps, a significant jump over the 135.17 Mbps speeds that Ookla observed in its Q3 2021 report.

T-Mobile also scored top marks for consistency, reliability, and especially availability; it’s the only carrier that can boast that the majority of its users with 5G-capable devices actually spend most of their time on 5G.

T-Mobile scored 61.4% on this metric, while AT&T came in second, with 48% of its users actually benefiting from 5G. Verizon came in a distant third at 36.4%, which isn’t all that surprising considering its early focus on deploying smaller pockets of mmWave.

The Manufacturers

One other interesting tidbit to come out of Ookla’s latest report is that even though the iPhone 13 leads the pack with the fastest 5G download speeds, Apple is actually in third place behind Google and Samsung when it comes to having the fastest smartphones overall.

Since Ookla’s report measures download performance across all the available cellular technologies, from 3G to 5G, it’s likely that Apple’s older devices pulled its score down here. This is one area in which the longevity of the iPhone actually has a downside; users who are still running Ookla’s Speedtest on an iPhone 6s — which can still run iOS 15 — will contribute just as much to these stats as those with the latest iPhone 13 Pro models. By contrast, there are likely fewer folks still toting older Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices, most of which are stuck on outdated versions of Android, and don’t care too much about the speeds they’re getting.

Totallee cases for Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max: Ultra thin protection and a splash of color

It's pretty rare to see people using phones without a case, and one great thing about Totallee cases  is the minimalist design that adds very little size or weight to your phone. The cases offer scratch protection, with the soft shells offer providing extra grip.

For the past week, I have been testing four options for the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max . It's been a while since I've tested out Totallee cases, so I was quite surprised to see there are now 15 options  for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, and I may have to try out some of these other options in the future.

The four Totallee cases I tested with my graphite iPhone 13 Pro Max included Frosted Clear , Frosted Black   Transparent Clear Soft , and Hybrid MagSafe Clear/Black . All four of these cases are available for $39 each. Other $39 options include Navy Blue Matte, Green Matte, and Hybrid Clear/Black.

This year we also see Totallee offering seven limited color options for $45 each. These include Pearl White, Peach Flamingo, Clear (Hard), Red, Solid Black, Grey, and Jet Black.

The elegance of the Totallee case is its simplicity with no branding anywhere, super-thin design (0.02 to 0.04 inches), lightweight, and ability to add just enough to offer some protection. MagSafe wireless charging is supported, but MagSafe accessories (such as an Apple Wallet) only work with the MagSafe compatible case option available this year.

The case protects the back from scratches and does have edge protection that may help with minor bumps. There is a slight raised edge around the rear camera opening, and given the large protrusion of the cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro Max, it is great to see some camera protection here. The edges of the case around the front of the phone rise just above the screen to help protect the display when you set it to face down on a table.

The case works flawlessly with Apple Pay and wireless charging. The cases fit very tightly, but they are easier to install and remove than previous versions I tested on other phones.

The matte cases are made of rigid polypropylene material, yet also flexible. It weighs almost nothing and serves as a removable skin for your phone. The matte options are perfect for those who don't really want to wrap their phones in a case but also want some scratch and edge protection.

The transparent case options have more of a glossy, gel feel to them (made of TPU). The transparent cases have slightly thicker material, but it also fully shows off the color and style of your iPhone 13 Pro Max. There is some shock absorption provided by the transparent cases too.

I tested the hybrid MagSafe one that shows off the phone and works perfectly with MagSafe accessories. There is a black frame around the edges and camera opening, while the rest of the back is transparent.

Totallee cases are perfect for people who don't like cases. The expanded selection of colors and materials is also nice to see.

You can get an iPhone 13 Pro engraved with a gold QR code

Caviar, a Russian luxury phone and phone accessory brand, has just come out with an ingenious design mod of the iPhone 13 Pro (and iPhone 13 Pro Max), that includes a personal QR code engraved straight on the phone's back. Engraved in gold-plated titanium, that is.The QR code-backed iPhone 13 series is dubbed "Digital Signature," and is already available for sale on Caviar's site.

The series caters to the the new post-pandemic culture, where in many places throughout the West, a valid passport or QR code is required to enter the majority of public facilities, such as restaurants, gyms, cafes, stores, and the like.

Plenty of regular folk have taken to putting their own COVID certificate on their lock screen or home screen, to facilitate the necessary evil of displaying it to security at the door of most public places they enter.

Of course, you don't necessarily need to engrave the QR code for your vaccine passport on Caviar's iPhone 13—you are allowed to encrypt literally any information that you want on the gold-titanium back plating.

There are three different versions of the luxury iPhone available, as part of the "Digital Signature" series: QRMATRIX, BLACK CARD, and GOLDEN CARD.

QRMATRIX:

iPhone 13 Pro, Pro Max - QRMATRIC

BLACK CARD:

iPhone 13 Pro, Pro Max - BLACK CARD

GOLDEN CARD:

iPhone 13 Pro, Pro Max - GOLDEN CARD

This "GOLDEN CARD" version is the most expensive of them all, selling for the truly insane price tag of $35,370 and $39,980—for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, respectively.

The body is made of satin-finished black PVD-coated titanium, decorated with gold-laser engravings, and sporting the phone's model information and unique phone number on the side to boot. Caviar has announced that it will be producing only 19 copies of this Pro Max model in total.

As it is, these dazzling creations will remain mere eye candy for the majority of us. It's not like the company created these luxurious iPhone mods to be best-sellers—more like a fashion statement, screaming utter coolness and unattainability.

While it isn't clear exactly how many of these iPhone 13 Pro models will be crafted and sold in total—well, the Caviar brand does feature "royalty" in the name, so we can only guess.
